Ian Loftus is based in Perth, Western Australia and has worked for the Australian, Western Australian and Northern Territory Governments in a range of policy, stakeholder engagement and communications roles, for a mining industry peak body, for a mining company and in public relations consulting. He has also been involved in health sector NGOs, and has served on the boards of Diabetes Australia Ltd, Glycemic Index Ltd, and the Diabetics Association of the Northern Territory Inc.
He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Queensland (majoring in History and Politics) and a Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Governance from Deakin University.
His interested in military history stems from his relatives' military service: his father was an infantry officer and fought in Vietnam, his grandfather served with the 8th Army at Tobruk in the Second World War, and his great-grandfather served with a light trench mortar battery in the Australian Imperial Force on the Western Front during the First World War. He also had two great-uncles who served with Royal Australian Air Force and Australian Army during the Second World War, and a distant cousin who fought with the Royal Welch Fusiliers on the Western Front. A great aunt served with the Australian Army Medical Women's Services in the Second World War.
